MERMAFIED Future members: Please read carefully!
Ahoy, Welcome to
Mermafied, The original practical merfolk club. This is a special community geared for artists of practically designed merfolk and aquatic themed art. The most notable thing about our club is the merfolk within are not the everyday 'traditional' mers, but something else entirely. So if that is what you were looking for, this is not really the place.
The term "practical merperson" refers to a functional (or realistic looking) merperson designed to actually survive in the water. They have a well structured anatomy, usually based on the structure of an existing species of fish, whale, cephalopod, jellyfish, nudibranch or whatever else. As you may have noticed from member's work, anything can and probably has been mermafied around here and it doesn't necessarily have to be a fish. Occasionally the characters come straight from the imagination. After joining as a member, you will get special offsite privileges, and access to our message boards and art exchanges, private wikipedia and other fun members-only perks.
These merfolk generally look more sea-creature than human, at least in their patterning, colors and fin structure (if they have fins that is). There is no division or separation between 'human' and 'sea creature' parts, since mermafied mers form a seamless whole entity. It helps to think of something as a whole composite creature in order to make it more natural than dividing it up into discreet parts. We also accept and display well crafted half-mers, those that have a natural believable design, with the traditional human colored skin on the torso. Everyone here takes into account the scientific and functional aspects of design, as well as fantasy, mythology or whatever their interest may be. The fusion of study and marine biology with art and mythology is what makes this club special and one of a kind. We encourage people to think outside the common 'mermaid' stereotype and see what is possible beneath the seas.
This IS NOT the place for simple fairytale mermaids and mermen with fish tails sewn horizontally to a severed human torso.

A cropped mermaid of that type is called a 'transplant', and is what most people think of when they ponder the word 'mermaid'. Transplants usually have human skin above the waist, an understructure of legs instead of a genuine fish/whale tail, and most interestingly
knees. Transplants are NOT allowed or displayed here, as there are plenty of other places for them. Half mers are not transplants, and have a seamless natural form usually with many fins and fishy elements to the entire body, as well as human coloration to their torsos.
Mermafied covers all styles af art, from anime to comic to realistic.
So any decent artist can join provided they can draw correct anatomy and have a love for the sealife. Exchanges and art projects are a regular part of the club, so please only consider joining if you are serious about your art. This isn't like most DA clubs, in that we are an actual closeknit community and our group activities are interactive, happening mostly off of the site.
To be considered for joining, you must:
a) Create a 'mersona' (or in plain terms, an original mermafied mermaid, merman or other mer character that represents you in some way).
The usual condition for joining is you must first create your very own practical mer-character/mersona, then you can become a member.

The mer must either be based on a sea-creature species, from the imagination with function in mind, or a combination of the two,
and it must have no human skin above the waist, knees etc.... Though it is perfectly fine to give your character a half mer form as well.
This character will be like a mer avatar for yourself, so pick something that represents you well or that you like a lot.
b) After you have an avatar created, you are good to go, just send the club a note with a link (or links) to the relevant picture/s so your application can be reviewed. No picture, no join. Please make sure it is a picture that demonstrate's your skill and knowledge of human and sea-creature anatomy.
c) If you want to be part of the mermafied community, but do not draw practical merfolk, or perhaps you just really appreciate the club and support the idea, feel free to join us as a supporter.

It requires nothing except a joining note letting us know you would like to be a supporter. Be sure to include 'joining as supporter' somewhere in your note or note header.
